The buckskin mare at the centre of this painting is at full gallop, hooves barely touching the ground — and yet her eye is calm, direct, and entirely unconcerned. Behind her, a dark bay presses close on the left. A chestnut pushes from the right. Three horses, one movement, one shared breath of motion and dust and speed.

And she meets your gaze as though you are simply part of the herd.

Anyone who has stood at a fence and watched horses run free knows this feeling — the ground vibrating slightly, the air shifting as they pass, the sudden awareness of how much power moves through an animal at full stride. This painting puts you inside that moment rather than outside it. You are not watching from a safe distance. You are running with them.

Painting three horses in motion required understanding each one individually before understanding them together. The way weight transfers through the haunches at a gallop, the particular angle of a flying mane, the overlapping of bodies that tells you they are moving as one rather than three — each of these details had to be felt before it could be painted. The muted, dusty palette keeps the eye moving across the canvas, while the pale ground beneath them suggests open space and speed without competing with the horses themselves.

But it is that eye that holds you.

Calm. Present. Unbothered by speed or dust or the chestnut crowding her shoulder.

Some creatures simply know where they belong. She is exactly where she is supposed to be — and she wants you to know it.
