Reflections began as a study in closeness — how near can you get to a horse before you stop seeing the animal and start seeing something more? The answer, it turns out, is that the closer you look, the more there is to find.

Horse people know this eye. They’ve stood at this distance before — close enough to feel the warmth, close enough to see themselves reflected back. There is a particular kind of trust in a horse that allows you this near. This painting is about that trust as much as it is about technique.

The deep, near-black coat demanded patience. Building that depth in oils — layer by layer, strand by strand — required understanding the coat not as a flat surface but as something alive, with direction and light and texture. The bridle hardware anchors the composition on the right, pulling the eye back from the darkness and reminding you that this is not a wild horse. This is someone’s horse. Someone knew this animal.

What stays with most people who see this piece is not the technical achievement, though that earns its own silence.

It’s the feeling of being seen.
