A horse in the act of rising — caught between the ground and standing once more. Dust lifts around him as his legs gather beneath him and his muscles prepare for the effort ahead.

Horses do this many times every day. And yet the longer I looked at this moment, the more I understood what it holds.

For a prey animal, the ground is the most vulnerable place imaginable. Down here, their greatest defence — the ability to run — is gone. And yet this horse shows no hesitation. No doubt. He simply gathers himself, trusts his strength, and rises.

I spent a long time with the reference photograph before I ever touched the canvas. The position of the forelegs, the tension through the shoulder, the shift of weight — everything needed to feel earned, not posed. The dust became an essential part of the composition, softening the atmosphere while anchoring the motion. A restrained palette of warm earth tones lets him emerge naturally from the landscape, as though he belongs entirely to the ground he’s leaving behind.

What stayed with me most was the expression on his face.

No panic. No doubt. Only quiet certainty.

Every one of us knows what it feels like to be down. Horses never question their ability to rise.
